FBI Director Christopher Wray introduced Wednesday that he plans to resign forward of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration subsequent month.
Wray’s announcement follows Trump publicly saying he plans to appoint former federal prosecutor and Trump loyalist Kash Patel to move up the company, changing Wray greater than two years earlier than the expiration of his 10-year time period.
“I’ve decided the right thing for the bureau is for me to serve until the end of the current administration in January and then step down,” Wray instructed FBI staffers, including, “In my view, this is the best way to avoid dragging the bureau deeper into the fray while reinforcing the values and principles that are so important to how we do our work.”
Trump nominated Wray to the function in 2017 after firing James Comey from it, claiming he “wasn’t doing a good job.” At the time, Comey had been main an investigation into whether or not the 2016 Trump marketing campaign had colluded with Russian interference within the presidential election.
