The President of the Republic of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, introduced the dissolution of the Parliament and convened early elections for subsequent May 18. “It cannot be wary from the ethical point of view of a prime minister,” stated the president in his speech to the nation on Thursday night, “and the parties have manifested themselves unanimously in favor of early elections”.
Rebelo de Sousa’s resolution comes following the autumn of the middle -right authorities led by Luís Montenegro, who on Tuesday didn’t move the proof of the vote of belief.
The legislative of May 18 would be the third early elections in three years. In 2022 the elections had been received by the Socialist Party of António Costa who obtained an absolute majority, however resigned in November 2023 and the Portuguese needed to return to the polls in March 2024.
