Denmark summons US ambassador over report of Greenland spying

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has voiced severe considerations over a report within the Wall Street Journal alleging that the US has ordered its intelligence businesses to accentuate spying actions in Greenland.

Mr Rasmussen acknowledged he would summon the appearing US ambassador to Denmark for clarification.

Speaking to reporters at a casual assembly of EU overseas ministers in Warsaw, Mr Rasmussen expressed his unease, saying: “I have read the article in the Wall Street Journal and it worries me greatly because we do not spy on friends.”

He additional emphasised his intention to handle the difficulty straight, including, “We are going to call in the US acting ambassador for a discussion at the foreign ministry to see if we can confirm this information, which is somewhat disturbing.”

The Wall Street Journal report, printed on Tuesday and citing two nameless sources, claims that the US is escalating its intelligence gathering on Greenland, linking this exercise to President Donald Trump’s beforehand acknowledged curiosity in buying the island.

The intelligence gathering reportedly will focus partly on figuring out people in Greenland and Denmark who help the Trump administration’s curiosity in taking on the island.

A US State Department spokesperson stated the division doesn’t touch upon intelligence issues.

The spokesperson referred to an earlier remark from National Security Council spokesperson James Hewitt, who stated Mr Trump has been very clear that the US is anxious in regards to the safety of Greenland and the Arctic.

Mr Trump has repeatedly stated he desires to take over Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory within the Arctic.

He has refused to rule out annexation by power, making a diplomatic disaster between the US, Denmark and Greenland.

The leaders of Denmark and Greenland have stated solely that Greenlanders can resolve the territory’s future.

However, they’ve discovered themselves treading a fragile line between firmly dismissing US ambitions over Greenland and making an attempt to keep up good ties with their conventional ally.
