Stéphane Le Foll leaves dealing with a divided left and a proper looking for a comeback | EUROtoday

The municipal council is nearly monochrome in Le Mans: the precise and the far proper didn’t get hold of any elected officers in 2020, leaving loads of room for the left. One of the challenges of the municipal elections of March 15 and 22, 2026 will subsequently be to revamp this panorama within the face of a favourite, the outgoing socialist mayor, Stéphane Le Foll, 65 years previous.

The latter made his candidacy official on Tuesday December 16. He claims to current himself “with the desire to continue what has been started” and the will to“invest in the future”. Around three priorities: “housing, health and education-training”. Elected mayor in 2018 after the demise of Jean-Claude Boulard (Socialist Party, PS, 2001-2018), simply re-elected within the second spherical in 2020 (63.14% of the vote), the previous Minister of Agriculture (2012-2017) of François Hollande is the favourite to succeed him in a metropolis anchored on the left since 1977.

Six candidates face him, beginning with an overtly “anti-Le Foll” listing supported by former socialists and associated events, the French Communist Party and Les Ecologistes. This listing, which needs to be led by the Sarthe MP Marietta Karamanli, 61 years previous – even when this has not but been introduced – intends to suggest a brand new approach of governing, highlighting the “participatory democracy” which was lacking, based on her, through the mandate.
