New Year: Laurent Nuñez guarantees “systematic” arrests within the occasion of unrest
A couple of hours earlier than the beginning of the December 31 festivities in France, the Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nuñez, assured that he wouldn’t “tolerate no overflow” and promised “systematic arrests” in case of hassle, Wednesday night.
“There will be systematic arrests if there are any troublemakers. (…) Tolerate no excess, I want to make it clear, that does not mean that there will not be any. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be people who will try to commit urban violence.”declared the Minister of the Interior to several media.
“Above all, this means that the instruction given is to intervene and make contact immediately. The police and gendarmes will do so with great firmness and determination to contain these possible disturbances to public order.”he clarified.
Around 90,000 police officers and gendarmes were mobilized for this evening, including 10,000 for Paris and the inner suburbs. “If there were to be incidents – the probability of there being any is still very high, since there are some every year – we will intervene with a lot, a lot of determination: that’s really what I asked the prefects, that we intervene and make contact, that we impact the groups at risk, in a way (…) that the disturbances to public order cease immediately – in any case, as quickly as possible”he explained.
The Minister of the Interior traveled across Ile-de-France on Wednesday, in contact with the police engaged in the transition to the new year: he thus went to Val-d’Oise, to the gendarmerie brigade of Domont before visiting the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS) of Villiers-le-Bel and meeting those who carry out checks at the train station of Garges-Sarcelles. The former Paris police chief then went to Seine-Saint-Denis to speak with police officers from Saint-Ouen. Each time, his message was the same: “firmness”.
Last yr, round 90,000 police and gendarmes had been mobilized throughout the nation for New Year’s Eve. In complete, there have been 984 automobiles set on hearth, 420 arrests and 310 police custody.
