«On Saturday I wrote this tune, then recorded it and eventually launched it in response to the state terror within the metropolis of Minneapolis. It is devoted to the folks of Minneapolis, to our harmless immigrant neighbors, and in reminiscence of Alex Pretti and Renee Good. Stay free, keep free.” Bruce Springsteen published a song entitled Streets of Minneapolis on his social pages, after the tragic events at the hands of Ice that occurred in the American city.
The song, partly acoustic, brings to mind Springsteen’s Streets of Philadelphia, his song about AIDS which was used in the soundtrack of the film Philadelphia. The Boss doesn’t give anyone any discounts and sings “Ice out now” out loud. In the text he describes Minneapolis as «a city on fire that fought fire and ice under the boots of an occupier, King Trump’s private army», «who came to Minneapolis to enforce the law» (‘Neath an occupier’s boots, King Trump’s private army from the DHS. Came to Minneapolis to enforce the law).
Springsteen mentions and pays homage to the two dead, killed by Ice agents: «Against the smoke and rubber bullets / At the first light of dawn / Citizens fought for justice / Their voices rang out in the night / And there were bloody footprints / Where there should have been mercy / And two dead left to die on the snowy streets / Alex Pretti and Renee Good» (Against smoke and rubber bullets / By the dawn’s early light / Citizens stood for justice / Their voices ringing through the night / And there were bloody footprints / Where mercy should have stood / And two dead left to die on snow-filled streets / Alex Pretti and Renee Good). And he lashes out against the system: «Their claim was self defense, sir / Just don’t believe your eyes / It’s our blood and bones / And these whistles and phones / Against Miller and Noem’s dirty lies. The song ends: «We’ll remember the names of those who died / On the streets of Minneapolis».
