Fifty-three migrants, together with two infants, are useless or lacking after a rubber boat carrying 55 individuals capsized off the coast of Libya, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) stated on Monday.
Two Nigerian girls have been rescued after the vessel overturned north of Zuwara, Libya, on 6 February.
One survivor stated they misplaced their husband, whereas one other reported shedding her two infants when the boat sank.
The boat, which was carrying migrants and refugees from African nations, departed from Al-Zawiya, Libya, at round 11pm on Thursday 5 February. It capsized round six hours later after taking up water.
The two survivors have been supplied with emergency medical care by IOM groups.
According to IOM information, no less than 484 migrants have been reported useless or lacking in 2026, after a number of shipwrecks within the Central Mediterranean, which is the world’s deadliest migration route.
There are believed to be a whole bunch extra deaths which haven’t been recorded, the UN organisation stated.
In 2025, greater than 1,300 migrants died or went lacking on the Central Mediterranean route.
