But Mr Neil mentioned the pact could be a “huge win” for the EU as a result of the UK must comply with European meals requirements. The broadcaster wrote on X: “We already run a massive trade deficit with the EU on food and agricultural products. This deal will make that deficit even bigger.
“It can even place UK meals and agribusiness underneath EU guidelines, rules and ECJ courtroom judgments as soon as extra, processes through which this time we can have no say.
“And it will undermine UK technological advances in agriculture, in which we are becoming world leaders, because it returns such research to the dead of Brussels’ ‘prudential’ approach, which regards all innovation as a risk unless it can be proven otherwise.
“Hugely retrograde for UK, enormous win for EU.”
He was responding to a post by the Cabinet Office about the new deal.
The post said: “Once finalised, our new UK-EU food and drinks deal will make it simpler for British buyers to purchase Spanish produce and cut back the obstacles to nice UK corporations promoting in Spain and the remainder of Europe.”

It comes as the Prime Minister is seeking closer ties with the EU, leading to accusations that Labour is rowing back on Brexit.
The PM said: “We are already aligned with the one market in some areas to drive down the costs of meals and power.
“We are trusted partners. Deeper economic integration is in all of our interests. So we must look at where we can move closer to the single market in other sectors as well, where that would work for both sides.”
