On February 21, 1916, the German military launched a significant offensive towards the fortified area of Verdun, within the Meuse. For ten months, the French military resisted. Some 50,000 troopers from the colonies took half within the preventing, nearly all of them North African riflemen. One hundred and ten years later, the Verdun Memorial pays tribute to them.
