Turnout in Gorton and Denton by-election 47.62%

Turnout at the Gorton and Denton by-election was 47.62 per cent with 36,903 votes cast, the returning officer has said.

This is only just lower than the turnout in the constituency at the 2024 general election, which was 47.8 per cent, despite by-elections typically seeing turnout that is much lower than general elections.

Now that verification of the votes has concluded, the main count will begin. Results are expected from 4am.

Green Party leader Zack Polanski has suggested he would back a probe into family voting in the Gorton and Denton by-election.

Row breaks out over family voting concerns

A row has erupted between Democracy Volunteers and Manchester City Council, after the former raised concerns over “high levels of family voting” in the Gorton and Denton by-election.

In the wake of their warning, Manchester City Council said no issues were reported while polls were open, and it was “extremely disappointing” the group “waited until after polls have closed to make such claims”.

But hitting again on the council, John Ault, director of Democracy Volunteers, stated: “It is a normal international standard not to issue a comment until after a voting has finished, another accepted aspect of election observation is that you are encouraged to ask questions of staff.

“This we did in a number of polling stations when the relevant presiding officer was available. Obviously they can be very busy so we don’t seek to interrupt their work.

“We posed questions about family voting in several polling stations and how staff dealt with it when it arose.”

Reform chair David Bull said ‘family voting’ not a new problem

David Bull, Reform’s chair, told Sky News that so-called “family voting” has been a problem in previous elections.

He claimed it was present in the 2019 Peterborough by-election, narrowly won by Labour over the Brexit Party, which took place four years before the practice was made illegal in 2023.

He noted that it was present in the 2014 Tower Hamlets mayoral election which ended up being overturned in the courts.

But he implied it had happened in other by-elections too.

Labour chair Anna Turley says reports of voter fraud ‘extremely concerning’

Labour’s chair Anna Turley has said she hopes the Electoral Commission look into potential election fraud now overshadowing the by-election count for Gorton and Denton.

Ms Turley was responding to reports by election monitors Democracy Volunteers who identified illegal “family voting” in 68 per cent of the polling stations they attended.

MsTurley said: “It’s really concerning to hear. I hope the appropriate authorities will be looking at that, examining it and taking any reasonable steps.”

Family voting is the technical term for when a family member often a husband observes another voting in the polling booth where they are supposed to be alone and often directs how they should vote.

The practice was banned in 2023 because of concerns over the way women in some ethnic minority groups are pressured.

Ms Turley added: “Obviously it is very early stages at the moment to assess the information but of course it’s deeply serious because every vote should be personal, secret. That’s the cornerstone of our democracy.

“So any evidence to the contrary is very concerning and I am sure the relevant authorities will be looking at this in the days and weeks ahead.”

The by-election is being overseen by Manchester City Council but ultimately complaints will end up with the Electoral Commission.
