10 years in the past this part devoted to explaining arithmetic with rigor, context and public vocation started in EL PAÍS. Coffee and theorems was born as a proposal from the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (ICMAT) to incorporate arithmetic, normally little coated within the science sections of newspapers, within the common media. The concept was obtained with enthusiasm by Patricia Fernández de Lis from EL PAÍS and we started our journey with a article on Ramanujan.
The title of the part arose from a well-known definition of the mathematical career, from the Hungarian Alfred Renyione of the vital influential figures of the twentieth century: “A mathematician is a machine that transforms coffee into theorems.” Rényi, along with being one of many key figures within the improvement of knowledge idea, defended a full of life and human imaginative and prescient of arithmetic, whose essential elements have been dialog, instinct and shared work. That spirit has accompanied Café y teoremas since its inception.
Since then, we’ve addressed an unlimited variety of matters in pure arithmetic and its dialogue with different sciences and with society: from cutting-edge analysis to related episodes within the historical past of our self-discipline or questions on schooling. We have carried out this due to the generosity of collaborators from all around the world, to whom we wish to specific our deep gratitude. The work of the ICMAT Communication Commission has additionally been elementary, whose recommendation has helped keep the stability between scientific precision and accessible dissemination.
But if one thing has given which means to those 10 years, it has been the readers. To those that have learn and shared every new installment, thanks. We hope to have been in a position to convey nearer a self-discipline that, though generally perceived as distant, is on the base of a lot of the world we inhabit.
Today the part says goodbye, with gratitude and delight. The want to speak arithmetic, to clarify and share it, stays extra related than ever, and at ICMAT we’ll proceed to take action in two new collaborations: Dimensión Fractal, on eldiario.es, and Entre Teoremas, on ABC.
