US permits sale of Russian oil at sea as Middle East battle sends power costs hovering | EUROtoday

The United States is briefly permitting the sale of Russian oil that’s at sea, the Treasury Department mentioned Thursday, as power costs soared after US-Israeli strikes on Iran plunged the Middle East into battle.

The transfer marked a momentary easing of financial sanctions in opposition to Russia, which has been focused over its invasion of Ukraine.

On Thursday, the Treasury issued a license authorising the supply and sale of Russian crude oil and petroleum merchandise which were loaded on vessels on or earlier than 12:01 am Eastern Time March 12, by means of 12:01 am on April 11.

The transfer got here after Washington final week briefly allowed Russian oil that was stranded at sea to be bought to India.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent mentioned in a press release that the newest authorization aimed to “increase the global reach of existing supply.”

But he insisted this was a “narrowly tailored, short-term measure.”

He added it will not present “significant financial benefit to the Russian government, which derives the majority of its energy revenue from taxes assessed at the point of extraction.”

Bessent had earlier mentioned President Donald Trump’s administration was contemplating lifting sanctions on extra Russian oil.

War within the Middle East has upended the world’s power and transport sectors, just about halting exercise within the crucial Strait of Hormuz by means of which a fifth of worldwide oil transits.
