Man and lady arrested after ‘tried arson assault’ | UK | News | EUROtoday

A person and a girl have been arrested on suspicion of arson endangering life after an incident at a synagogue in north London. Two bottles, one thought to include petrol, had been positioned close to Finchley Reform Synagogue in Fallow Court Avenue, Finchley, shortly after midnight on Wednesday, within the incident which is being handled as an antisemitic hate crime.

On Wednesday night, the Metropolitan Police stated officers had arrested a 47-year-old lady and a 46-year-old man on suspicion of arson endangering life. The power stated the lady was arrested at an deal with in Watford and the 46-year-old man was arrested within the Watford space. Both are in custody, Scotland Yard stated.

Officers stated two individuals, who had been sporting darkish clothes and balaclavas, had been seen approaching the synagogue simply after midnight. The bottle, which contained a substance considered petrol, was smashed by a brick thrown on the constructing. Neither of the bottles had been ignited and the individuals fled the scene, the power added, with no harm or accidents reported.

The incident is being investigated by detectives from the Met’s North West Command Unit, with assist from specialist detectives from Counter Terrorism Policing London.

Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, who leads policing within the space, stated: “I hope the swift action by officers today to identify and arrest two people provides some reassurance and demonstrates how seriously we take attacks of this nature.

“However, we perceive the numerous concern the Jewish neighborhood will really feel at one other incident so quickly after the arson assault on 4 ambulances in Golders Green.

“There is no suggestion the matter in Finchley and the incident in Golders Green, for which three people have been charged, are linked. Our increased patrols in the Finchley area continue, and I would ask that anyone with concerns speaks to my officers.”

Cantor Zoe Jacobs, senior clergy on the synagogue, stated the Jewish neighborhood would “not be deterred by these cowardly acts”. She stated: “Instead, we will continue to prioritise building bridges across the wider Barnet community.”
