Cristiano Ronaldo declares his work in Europe ‘done’ at Al Nassr unveiling

Cristiano Ronaldo declared “in Europe, my work is done” as he embraced a new frontier after being unveiled by Al Nassr on Tuesday evening.

A five-time Champions League winner, who also counts multiple Premier League, LaLiga and Serie A titles among his many honours, Ronaldo linking up with the Saudi Arabia club has invited plenty of scrutiny.

Rather than seek to further his legacy with another European giant – following an acrimonious exit from Manchester United in November – the 37-year-old has instead signed a deal with Al Nassr that runs until 2025.

In his first public appearance at his new club’s stadium Mrsool Park, Ronaldo said: “I’m feeling very good. I’m so proud to make this big decision in my life.

“In Europe, my work is done; I won everything, I played at the most important clubs in Europe and for me now, it’s a new challenge. This is a great opportunity, not only in football but also to change the mentality of the new generation.

“I had many opportunities in Europe, many clubs in Brazil, in Australia, in the US and even in Portugal. Many clubs tried to sign me but I gave my word to this club to develop not only the football but other parts of this amazing country.”

Excitement built throughout the day ahead of Ronaldo’s introduction, with fans making their way to the stadium early in anticipation of his arrival.

Large video screens on the exterior walls of the ground pictured him in Al Nassr’s yellow and blue shirt.

Several outlets have reported Ronaldo’s salary as upwards of £160 million-per-year, making him the highest-paid footballer in history.

The Portuguese feels he could make his debut for Al Nassr later this week in their Saudi League match against Al Tai on Thursday.

Ronaldo added: “I’m a unique player. I beat all the records there. I want to beat a few records here.

“This contract is unique but I’m a unique player, so for me it’s normal. I really don’t worry about what people say. I am really, really happy to be here.

“I know the league is very competitive, I saw many games. I hope to play after (Wednesday) if the coach thinks there’s a chance. I’m ready to keep playing football.”
