MPs will probably be recalled to the House of Commons to debate the way forward for British Steel on Saturday. The uncommon weekend sitting will happen to debate the unsure way forward for British Steel’s Scunthorpe plant.

Jingye, the Chinese proprietor of the British Steel, plans to shut the blast furnaces and swap to a greener type of manufacturing. Ministers have mentioned all choices are on the desk for its future, together with nationalisation, over considerations its closure would go away the UK with none home virgin metal makers.

In a sign of how critical the Government is taking the problem, it’s the first time the Commons has been recalled since August 18, 2021 when MPs returned to Parliament to debate the scenario in Afghanistan.

The Saturday sitting will start at 11am, when MPs will debate “legislative proposals to ensure the continued operation of British Steel blast furnaces is safeguarded”, in keeping with the workplace of Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Commons Speaker.

In a letter to MPs, Sir Lindsay mentioned he was happy the “public interest” requires the recall.
